Force Development Services Launches new EOD Mission POD
Whilst this project is for an overseas customer, the UK’s General Support Utility Programme, centred on replacing the aging Land Rover fleet, and similar vehicles, would also benefit from a FRES like modular “plug and play” approach. This would enable different mission modules to be fitted to a common platform, maximising operational effectiveness, and reducing the overall cost of ownership.
Claire Hemmings, FDS’s CEO said “we are delighted to be delivering our first EOD POD, as Body-in-White, ready to receive its operational livery in country”
Simon Bradley, FDS’s Engineering Director said “we have adopted a different approach for this EOD vehicle project. Initially driven by a shortage of suitable vehicles during the COVID pandemic, a modular, fully capable POD was conceived that would be agnostic to the base vehicle. This approach enabled us to break the usual linear development and production cycle, thereby enabling the POD to be designed and manufactured whilst waiting for the delivery of the host vehicle. Work is well underway to design different module configurations, also agnostic to the base vehicle”
The customers supplied host vehicle in this case, was an Iveco Daily 4x4 LWB chassis cab, offering true off-road capability in an extremely comfortable and well-equipped package.
The POD equipment comprises:
- A multi-source 220/115 VAC and 24/12 VDC electrical distribution system enabling power supply from the vehicle, system batteries, generator, or shore supply.
- A 750kg capacity tail lift.
- Full environmental conditioning, available on the move or on station.
- Additional rear facing crew seating for three operators.
- Elevated light mast with pan/tilt 10000 lumen LED units.
- Small pan/tilt spotlight.
- Pan/Tilt/Zoon, day/night video camera with 35x optical zoom.
- Full array of “Blue Lights”.
- Custom operator station with camera, light, and power controls.
- Integrated PC, VDU keyboard and touch pad.
- Multi-mode LED lighting.
- Bomb suit and helmet storage.
- Equipment storage lockers, draws and ancillary equipment.
